The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering organized a guest lecture on Optimization of Solar Power Harvesting with DC – DC Converters on 11.11.2024 (Monday) at Thomas Alwa Edison, Seminar hall, AAACET. The students of III and IV year Electrical and Electronics Engineering participated in the programme. K. Gayathri of III year EEE welcomed the gathering and R. Nithyalakshmi of III year EEE introduced the resource person to the audience. Dr. C. Senthil Kumar Professor and Head, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering honored the resource person with a memento.
Dr. P. Maruthupandi., Associate Professor, Government College of Technology, Coimbatore is the resource person of the programme. During the lecture, he provided valuable insights in the following areas:
- Solar Power Harvesting Challenges: Discussing factors such as varying sunlight intensity, shading effects, and efficiency losses in photovoltaic systems.
- Role of DC-DC Converters: Explaining how these converters play a critical role in optimizing power extraction by maintaining the maximum power point (MPPT) of the solar panels Types of DC-DC Converters like Covering buck, boost, and buck-boost converters, along with their design considerations and applications in the solar power systems.
- Optimization Techniques: Highlighting advanced algorithms and control strategies, including perturb and observe (P&O), incremental conductance, and artificial intelligence methods for enhancing efficiency.
- Future Trends: Addressing the integration of hybrid energy systems and smart grid technologies for sustainable energy solutions.
His engaging presentation was complemented by practical examples, case studies, and simulations and he made the session highly informative for both students and faculty members. The lecture concluded with an interactive Q&A session where the participants actively sought clarification on the topics such as system efficiency, converter design, and real-world implementation challenges.
The guest lecture proved to be a highly enriching experience for the attendees, which broadened their knowledge of solar power optimization and advanced power electronics. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by A. Priyanka of III year EEE.
